Book Review: I Was a Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones
I Was a Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones is pure fun from start to finish. This book is a must-read for all fans of slasher movies.
Told from the point of view of high school student Tolly Driver, Jones presents the slasher ability as a curse that comes with superpowers. In Tolly, Jones has created a sympathetic slasher—a good kid who doesn’t want to be a villain. I really enjoyed this unique take on the slasher genre. You can tell Jones is a superfan of slasher films; he plays with the tropes in ways that are both humorous and innovative. As Tolly explores his newfound abilities, I was reminded of Peter Parker discovering his powers after being bitten by that radioactive spider. However, even the lighthearted scenes come with the heavy realization that Tolly won’t use his powers for good, only for murder and revenge.
Once you get caught by this book, it won’t let you go until you finish the best ending I’ve come across in any slasher story.
